Cycling with Your Pet:
A Fun and Safe Adventure 🚴♂️🐾
David and I have always loved cycling, and the moment we got our first dog, Arthur, we started looking for ways to bring her along. Our goal was to be able to ride to the park together, making our trips both fun and practical. After much research, we found our favorite option—a dog-specific front bike basket. This basket is designed for safety and comfort, with built-in cushioning, secure attachments, and convenient pockets. It also doubles as a carry bag, making it easy to transport our pup off the bike as well.
When we added Audrey to our family, we purchased a second basket—this time a wicker version that suited my bike’s style better. This setup worked perfectly for our small dogs and has been our go-to ever since. However, for larger pets, there are other great options to consider.

Options for Cycling with Pets
🐾 Front Bike Baskets – Ideal for small dogs, these baskets provide a safe and cozy ride.
🐾 Rear Bike Baskets – A good option for slightly larger small dogs who need extra space. These typically attach to a sturdy rear rack. Make sure to secure your pet with a harness and attach them to the basket.
🐾 Bike Trailers – Perfect for medium to large dogs, trailers provide stability and comfort while keeping your pet secure.
🐾 Bike Leashes – For high-energy dogs who love to run, bike leashes allow them to trot alongside while keeping a safe distance from the wheels. This option requires proper training and should only be used in safe environments.
Safety First! 🦺🐶
Ensuring your pet’s safety while cycling is the top priority. Here are a few essential precautions to keep in mind:
✔️ Always secure your pet – Use a harness, not a collar, and attach them safely to the basket or trailer.
✔️ Protect their eyes – We use doggles (dog goggles) to shield our pups from wind, dust, and UV rays.

✔️ Consider a helmet – We found small dog helmets that fit Arthur but regrettably none small enough to fit Audrey. It took some time for Arthur to adjust, but they’re a great added safety measure.
✔️ Introduce them gradually – Let your pet get used to the basket or trailer before heading out on a full ride. Start with short, slow trips to help them feel comfortable.
✔️ Monitor the weather – Avoid cycling in extreme heat, and always bring water for your pet.
Back in 2012, when we lived in Melbourne, David and Arthur were even featured in the Herald Sun riding together—Arthur in her basket, wearing her little helmet and doggles! Years later, when we lived in Scotland, David and I made a YouTube review of these baskets to help others find safe and practical cycling solutions for their pets (link here!).

Now in Brisbane, we still love biking with our dogs—whether it’s a trip to the park or a scenic ride along the river.

With the right setup and safety precautions, cycling can be a fantastic way to enjoy time outdoors with your furry best friend!
