How to Prepare for a Photo Session
A Stress-Free Checklist for a Successful Pet Photoshoot
A professional pet photoshoot is more than just snapping a few cute pictures — it’s about capturing your pet’s true personality in a calm, enjoyable way. The good news? A little preparation goes a long way in creating beautiful, timeless artwork (and keeping tails wagging along the way 🐕💛).
Whether your pet is bouncy, shy, senior, or somewhere in between, this simple checklist will help set everyone up for success.
🐾 Before the Session: Preparing Your Pet
✅ Practice Basic Training (If Your Pet Knows It)
If your pet already understands cues like sit, stay, or down, a little refresher practice in the days leading up to your session can be helpful. No stress if they don’t — I work pet-led and never expect perfection.

🛁 Give Them a Wash (But Not a Makeover)
• A bath 1–3 days before the session is ideal
• Avoid grooming within one week of your shoot
• Skip drastic haircuts or complete makeovers
Why? Fresh grooms can leave fur too fluffy, spiky, or uneven — and we want your pet to look like themselves, just on their best fur-day 🐩😉
🐕 Burn a Little Energy (Not All of It)
For excitable or energetic pets:
• A short walk or play session beforehand is perfect
• Avoid anything too long or tiring
We’re aiming for “calm-but-happy,” not zoomies or snoozies 🐾⚖️
🧸 Gather Their Comfort Items
Please have these ready:
• Favourite toy
• High-value treats
• Any outfits, collars, or props you’d like included
Familiar items help nervous pets feel safe and confident — and sometimes become part of the story we capture 💛
🏡 Preparing Your Home for the Photoshoot
Because I bring the studio to you (yes please 🙌), a little space prep makes a big difference.
📏 Clear a Suitable Area
• Minimum recommended space: 2m x 3.5m
• Bigger is always better where possible
• Smaller backdrops: 1.5m wide
• Full-size backdrops: 3m wide
This might mean:
• Sliding furniture aside
• Temporarily removing coffee tables or chairs
Don’t worry — I’ll help guide you on the day 🐾
🧹 Quick Tidy (No Need for a Deep Clean!)
If an area of your home will appear in the photos:
• Remove clutter
• Clear surfaces
• Hide distracting items
Think “styled but lived-in,” not showroom perfection ✨
🐶 On the Day: Final Tips for Success
• Feed your pet as normal (hungry pets = distracted pets)
• Keep the mood relaxed — pets pick up on your energy
• Trust the process (and your photographer 😉)
• Be patient — breaks are always okay
Some of the best images happen between moments, when your pet is simply being themselves 💛
