Spring has a funny way of sneaking up on us. One day it’s cool and grey, and the next your dog is zoomie-ing around the backyard and your cat has claimed the sunniest window in the house. There’s a real shift in energy that happens around September in Brisbane. Honestly, it’s one of my favourite times to photograph pets. Here’s why it might be the perfect time for you to book a session, too.

Your Pet Is at Their Best Right Now

After a winter of cosy spots and slower days, spring tends to bring out a different side of our animals. Dogs get that extra bounce back in their step. Cats stretch out in patches of warm light. Even the more timid personalities tend to open up a little when the energy around them shifts.

That natural vitality comes through in portraits. There is a looseness and playfulness that is harder to capture at other times of year, and it makes for images that genuinely feel alive.

If your pet has a particular spark to them, spring is the season it tends to show.

Spring Sessions Are Simply More Comfortable

Brisbane summers are beautiful, but they are not gentle. By December, the heat and humidity are in full swing, and that can make sessions harder on everyone, your pet included. Panting, restlessness, and the general chaos of peak-summer energy are not ideal conditions for a relaxed portrait.

Spring is different. The temperature is warm without being overwhelming. Pets settle more easily, stay calmer, and have the energy to engage without overheating.

Because I use professional studio lighting that I bring to your home, the quality of your portraits is consistent year-round regardless of the weather outside. But a comfortable pet is always a more relaxed pet, and a more relaxed pet gives you better portraits. Spring genuinely is the sweet spot for that.

Christmas Is Coming Faster Than You Think

I say this every year and every year people are surprised by how quickly it happens. We are heading into September now, and Christmas is only 16 weeks away.

That might feel like plenty of time. But here is the thing: once you factor in session availability, editing, artwork production, and delivery, there is a real deadline to keep in mind.

Sessions book out several weeks in advance during this period, and my turnaround from session to artwork delivery is 6 to 9 weeks. To have your portraits ready comfortably before Christmas, you need to be booking your session in the next few weeks.

If you are hoping to gift a pet portrait, either to yourself or to someone who loves their animal the way you love yours, the window to act is now rather than later.

A Pet Portrait Makes a Deeply Personal Gift

There are gifts, and then there are gifts that make someone stop and feel something. A portrait of a beloved pet falls firmly in the second category.

Whether it is a canvas for your own living room, a framed print for a friend who lost their dog last year, or a beautifully finished wall art piece for a family member who talks about their cat the way most people talk about their children.  A pet portrait lands differently to anything you could buy in a shop.

You can explore our range of  wall art and artwork options here , from prints and canvas through to framed pieces. Every order is handcrafted locally here in Brisbane, and I check everything personally before it reaches you.

How the Session Actually Works

If you have never booked a portrait session before, or you are nervous about how your pet might behave, the process is much simpler and calmer than most people expect.

I bring everything to you. The portable studio comes to your home, which means your pet is already in an environment where they feel comfortable. There is no travel, no waiting rooms, no unfamiliar smells. David and I take our time getting set up and letting your pet settle into the session at their own pace. We photograph all species and all temperaments, including the wiggly ones.

Do Not Leave It Until December

Every year I hear from people who reach out in November hoping to get artwork ready for Christmas, and I genuinely hate having to turn them away or disappoint them. The production timeline is what it is, and I cannot rush the craftsmanship without compromising the quality.

The gift of a pet portrait is one of those things where a little forward planning makes all the difference. Book now, have a relaxed and enjoyable session during the best season of the year, and know that your artwork will be waiting for you well before the silly season kicks into full gear.

If you would like to have a chat about what a session looks like for your pet, I would love to hear from you.
